A close inspection of a brake hose will usually identify if there is a problem. Vehicle WOF Testing Stations usually inspect all your brake hoses and steel brake lines during there inspection. They fail vehicles with a rusty brake line.

Geddes inspect front brake hoses & rear brake hoses during a Medium, Major and Maxi Vehicle Service. We will provide a quote on replacing brake lines and hoses.

We look for perish marks like splitting of the rubber hose, we check for swelling of the brake hoses. We check for signs of brake fluid leaking. It is almost impossible to tell if the internal of the brake hose is failing unless the brakes test as unbalanced. UNBALANCED BRAKES AUCKLAND If the inner core is leaking then it usually swells the outer lining. Some swell out like a balloon before bursting.

If the brake hose is swelling then this usually makes the brake pedal feel spongy. If the hose bursts then you will loose braking efficiency at least on that wheel.

Usually if it bursts a front brake hose then you loose braking to both front brakes. If a rear brake hose or a rear brake line bursts then you should still have front brakes.

If a front brake hose bursts then you should still have rear brakes. This is only the case if there is still brake fluid in the brake master cylinder and the rest of your braking system is still in good working order. Most modern brake master cylinders have separate reservoirs for the front brakes and another for the rear brakes.

If you notice surface rust on a steel brake line and treat it with a rust inhibitor of some sort then you will likely continue to pass each WOF for some time. If you disguise rust pits in the rusty brake lines then this could be dangerous as brake fluid under pressure could burst the brake steel line & fluid will leak out.

Geddes have the equipment to make steel brake lines for your replacement brake lines. If other sections of the line are in good order then usually we can perform a brake line repair.
