Geddes Automotive Auckland service & repair squeaky brakes. How to minimize or stop brake squealing problems.

WHY DO MY BRAKES SQUEAL, WHY ARE MY BRAKES SQUEALING:

We have listed what we believe are the most common reasons for squeaky brakes or squealing brakes problems. The following list is in the order, the most common cause to the not so common cause.

Discs or brake drums having lips so require machining; brake pads condition — type; linings overheated; discs or drums have been overheated and glazed; pads not fitting the cradles correctly; damaged or missing pad clips; no anti rattle shims; no anti squeal brake spray applied to brake pads; discs, brake drums and/or pads worn on an angle; brake pads wearing unevenly; calliper not square to brake disc; calliper slides seizing; movement in calliper slides. All these conditions can cause brakes squeaky problems.

WHY DO I HAVE SQUEALING BRAKES AFTER REPLACEMENT PADS ARE FITTED:

The most common cause again is that the discs or drums were not machined before the new pads and/or linings were replaced. The rest of the above causes can also be the cause of brakes squeaking or squealing after brake pad replacement.

BRAKE SQUEALING HOW TO MINIMIZE

You should always machine brake discs and brake drums when new brake pads and brake linings are being fitted. (Continued below)

This squares up the surfaces that touch and you get more area of brake pad and lining touching the brake disc and brake drum. There will be less heat generated when braking.

If you need your brakes repaired to pass a WOF now, then do the job properly the first time — machine your discs or drums. Geddes Automotive can machine your discs or drums for you.

We find that approximately 50% of customers that do not want their discs and/or drums machined fail to get even braking or good braking and fail the WOF recheck.

If you fit new pads or linings then have problems with failing your WOF or the brakes begin to squeal and if you then have your brakes machined and re — fit the partly worn brake pads or brake linings, you could still have uneven braking. You will likely get squealing brakes (brake squeal) again.

It always pays to do the job right first time — machine and linings. Geddes automotive have 2 types of brake lathes, onboard and bench mounted. Refer to "BRAKE DISCS & BRAKE DRUM MACHINING."
