GEDDES AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR BRAKES
GRINDING NOISE
BRAKE LATHES for BRAKE DISC & BRAKE DRUM MACHINING
Geddes Automotive Auckland diagnose grinding brakes noise. We have 2 brake lathes to resurface — machine brake discs & brake drums.
BRAKES NOISE
If you hear what you think is a brake grinding noise when braking you should refrain
from using your brakes if you can and get us to check them for you.
If it is a front disc brake noise or rear brake noise it could
be the telltales scrapping on the disc or it could be the brake pad steel backing scraping on the
disc steel to steel. If you have a drum grinding brake noise it could be the linings down to the
rivets or glue or steel shoe. If the grinding brake noise is because the pads or linings are down
to steel and you continue to use your brakes you will very likely need your brake drums or discs
machined. Continued use could wear the disc or drum below its minimum size and you will then have
the added expense of replacing the disc or drum.
If the noise brake is the telltales and they have only just begun to make a noise then this is warning you to check your brakes before damage occurs.
BRAKE MACHINING (Disc & brake drum resurface lathe)
Geddes have two types of brake machines (lathe brake), the on car brake lathes and
the on the bench brake lathe. Refer to photos of the on the vehicle brake lathe and bench brake
lathe to the right. If your discs or drums are at our workshop by 8:30am we should be able to machine them the same day - check with us first.

Brake drums and discs wear with use and eventually the wear leaves lips on the edges of
rotors or drums. The lips can cause a brake grinding noise but usually squeal. The front brakes wear
quicker than the rear. The most common brake service we provide is the front brake rotor machining
If we fit new brake pads or linings without using the brake lathe machine to resurface the faces the brakes will likely fail a WOF and or will cause the brakes to squeal. This is usually because the pads or linings will catch on the lips or high spots on the drum or brake disc causing hot spots which can glaze.
This prevents the linings to touch over the full surface reducing braking efficiency.
FREE BRAKE INSPECTIONS ON CARS BUT NOT TRUCKS INCLUDES: —
Removing LH front and LH rear wheel (and drums if any) and performing a visual
inspection only. We will discuss and estimate the cost for the job from this inspection. If you require
all 4 brakes checked there will be a charge of $35 + GST if you do not continue with the required repair. Truck
inspections are not free.
COST TO MACHINE BRAKES
Brake disc machining on our automotive brake lathe $23.50
+ GSTeach
Brake drum machining on our automotive brake lathe $27.50
+ GSTeach
This is the price if you bring your disc or drum to us and we only have to resurface it on the brake
disc machine with one cut.
COST TO REMOVE YOUR DISCS, MACHINE BRAKES ROTORS & REASSEMBLE
To remove your disc rotors, machine your disc rotors then reassemble with your existing pads or replacement pads, the price ranges from $150.00 + GST
Depending on the type, make, model & year of your vehicle, depends on what parts are
required. Once we have diagnosed the brake problem we can advise the options and costs for your brake repair
fix.
WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU FIT BRAKE PADS OR LININGS & DO NOT MACHINE BRAKES
The surface of the new linings will not match the surface of the brake rotors or brake
drums. The linings will only touch the surface on the high spots. This may not provide sufficient braking
or may provide unbalanced
braking and your vehicle may fail the WOF inspection.
It is nearly always cheaper and better to repair your brakes properly the first time. |
