FREE inspection of muffler & exhaust and full exhaust system for petrol and diesel exhaust systems. We will give you advice as to the approximate expected life of each section of your exhaust system and exhaust repairs. It is best to ring and book an appointment time.

The LOW VOLUME VEHICLE TECHNICAL ASSOCIATION (LVVTA) can test your vehicle with an OBJECTIVE TEST ; that is they will do a stationary noise test coming from your tail pipe and provide a report for you. If your vehicle complies with the NZ laws they will issue you with a unique identification sticker. I understand that you can present this information to your WOF issuer who you may then be able to persuade to issue the WOF if this was the only reason left to fail your vehicle.

At present the NZ laws are being changed. It is up to the WOF inspector as to whether he believes your exhaust is too noisy to pass a WOF. If he says it is, then you can either:

1. Take your vehicle to a Low Volume tester to have it tested and a certificate provided. I have been told the cost for this may range from $120 to $150.

However at present even if your vehicle is under the 95 db limit and you get the certificate, this does not guarantee that the WOF inspector will then issue a WOF. The laws still need to be changed before the certificate will guarantee you get a WOF. (These laws will change again on 1 June 2008). We understand that as from 1 June 2008, cars and light goods vehicles that come into NZ after this date will need to comply with the new 90 dBA level. The remaining vehicles already in NZ will continue to be required to comply with the existing rule of 95 dBA.

2. Bring your vehicle to Geddes, we can either quieten your exhaust (can be cheaper than a Low Volume certificate) and/or

Have Geddes check your vehicle for sound to see if you are below the limit. We have a db meter and can check the exhaust sound (noise) level of your vehicle. This is only

$25.00 + GST

and will be a cheaper indication of how noisy your vehicle is.

If you have a noisy muffler, then we can recommend an exhaust repair or exhaust replacement for a quiet muffler and exhaust.

Small Holes / Fractures, Exhausts & Mufflers:

Geddes staff take pride in their welding abilities and skills. So long as the metal around the area of damage is sufficiently strong so that we can use the mig welder then some small repairs will be as low as:

WELDING & REPAIRING AREAS OF DAMAGE

Exhaust repairs, muffler repairs.

If you have run over something and there is now a muffler hole or exhaust hole, then a weld will usually be a successful repair. If the muffler & exhausts, exhaust pipe or bracket has fractured or split and the steel is still sufficiently strong (has not rusted away) and we can use the mig welder for the exhaust repair, then we often repair exhaust or do a muffler repair with a simple single weld for this price.

GAS WELDING

Geddes staff take pride in their GAS welding abilities and skills. Gas welding is better suited to building up rusted areas but is a more expensive type of welding and requires more skill and time to properly fuse the metals.

If the metal around the area of damage is weak through thinning of the metal by rust or corrosion and we need to gas weld the area, then some small repairs will be as priced below.

We will discuss with you the approximate time we believe an exhaust repair by welding will last.

The seam, on the exhaust pipe or muffler, is often a place where a hole begins. Welding the seam of the exhaust pipe or muffler can prolong the life of the exhaust system.

WHAT IS A CATALYTIC CONVERTER?

Catalytic converters are a part of the exhaust system. They look similar to a small muffler. They are a unit that converts the dangerous exhaust emissions into natural less harmful gasses, from carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide and water.

Time, abuse and poorly tuned engines cause irreparable damage. The cat can break up and from the cat back exhaust system can become clogged causing extra back pressure on the engine and exhaust system and resulting in a loss of power.

The vehicles computer may sense the extra heat generated and send the engine management system into a shut down or reduced power mode. The sensor should bring up a warning light on the dash.

PIPE BENDING, PIPE EXPANDING / FLARING & REPLACING CATALYTIC CONVERTER

REMOVING THE CAT AND/OR FITTING A SHORT SECTION OF TUBE UP TO 400mm:

Exhaust repairs. Catalytic converters or small mufflers & exhaust are often removed and replaced with a muffler, cat replacement or pipe. Sections of damaged exhausts & muffler can also be replaced this way. We often are required to replace from the catback exhaust and mufflers because of blockages. To replace a section of exhaust approximately 400mm long would cost:

PIPE BENDING:

We custom bend exhaust tubing of various grades to samples or drawings. Our exhaust pipe bender has a number of various attachments, an exhaust pipe expander, a tube reducer and various flaring tools. We manufacture cones and collectors for extractors and headers.

The cost for us to make up pipes is charged on a time and material cost basis. We can give you a quote before we start to make a part for you. Most pipes cost:

FLEXIBLE COUPLING REPLACEMENT: (Flexible joint replacement exhaust repair)

Geddes carry large stocks of flexible pipe for cars, vans and trucks. The flex is designed to relieve stresses in the exhaust system prolonging the life of the mufflers, pipe and joints (the full exhaust system).

There are many types and sizes of flex units (flexible pipe) ranging in size from 19mm up to 203mm. The braided type of flexible couplings range from 44mm to 101mm and larger by special order.

There are many ways we can overcome a leak in a flex. The cheapest is by removing the flex and replacing it with tube. We do not recommend this type of exhaust repair. Other parts of your vehicles exhaust will be stressed leading to premature failure.

Cost for this type of exhaust repair will range from:

Peter Geddes spent many years Drag Racing and as a Co Driver in club rallies. We have sponsored many successful drag cars; rally cars, stock cars and speedway cars. I held many different class records including sports car and gas classes. Needless to say the various vehicles had our sports exhausts and extractors when the records were set and rally's won.

After forty odd years in the trade there's not much we don't know about exhausts.

Extractor and Header Manifolds. Some people call an extractor an exhaust header, whatever you call them they replace the exhaust manifold and are designed to improve Kilowatts - Horse Power.

Geddes manufacture extractors for vehicles when ready made extractors are not available. Geddes recommend, supply and fit Coby extractors.

We build all types of custom systems, dual exhaust, dual to single and single to dual, big ones and small ones. We custom build systems for flow master exhaust mufflers. We will also fit your own flowmaster muffler.

If you need your truck muffler welded or truck pipe welded on a truck exhaust system, Geddes (09)636 7064 are specialists in truck exhaust repairs. We weld truck, van exhausts and all exhaust systems.

Truck Exhaust Repairs: Truck muffler repair and truck pipe repair service. We bend and swage truck pipes on our exhaust bender exhaust pipe expander attachment up to 3 inch (75mm) in diameter and carry larger pipe sizes in stock. Geddes repair truck exhaust and repair truck pipes by replacing part of the pipe work or all the pipe work. Geddes will repair your truck muffler or replace truck mufflers. We give you the customer the choices.

DESCRIPTION OF EXHAUST COMPONENTS:

The exhaust system on almost every vehicle consists of the following:

EXHAUST MANIFOLD:

The Exhaust Manifold bolts to the head of the engine. These can warp and crack with the heat, and/or stress or break the studs. The gasket (some manifold to head joints do not have a gasket) can get damaged with age or movement.

We can repair manifolds and replace gaskets and studs. The manifolds can be welded and machined. Geddes have the equipment required for this type of repair.

FRONT PIPE(S):

The front pipe(s) is bolted to the manifold and runs down under the vehicle.

Some are a single pipe, some are twin pipes. Some break prematurely but most weaken with age. Repairs to a front pipe could be:

INTER- MEDIATE PIPE(S):

The intermediate pipe(s) is located between the engine and rear wheels. Some vehicles have 2 or 3 intermediate sections.

Some intermediate sections have mufflers attached and some go past the rear wheels.

Replacing a short intermediate pipe fitted could be:

$50.00 to$80.00 + GST

ARCH PIPE:

The arch pipe (s) is located between the front of the rear wheel and goes over the rear suspension. If the pipe continues to the rear of the vehicle then it is usually called the tail pipe. The price for this exhaust repair fluctuates due to pipe size, quality of pipe, length and brackets on the pipe.

Replacing an arch pipe fitted could be:

TAIL PIPE

Replacing a tail pipe fitted could be:

WELDING

Exhausts Repaired by welding. The sections of exhaust may just need a simple exhaust repair; the exhaust may be able to be welded, refer to welding costs above.

SECOND HAND PARTS:

If requested, Geddes will use second hand (secondhand) parts for your repair. We carry some second hand exhaust parts in stock.

The parts suppliers will usually provide a short warranty for second hand parts. Exhausts corrode from inside out. It is difficult to guess the expected life of second hand parts. For this reason we do not warranty the labour when fitting second hand parts but we do when fitting new parts we supply.
