FREE BRAKE INSPECTION:

Of front and rear brakes.

Geddes recommend that you ask for a FREE estimate or quote before work is started on your vehicle.

For a FREE quote or estimate we need to test drive and check for visible faults. A free inspection covers; a Geddes technician or mechanic will remove a front and rear wheel usually the right hand side and check for:

Brake lining (shoe) and/or pad wear;

Brake lining (shoes) and/or pad damage such as glazing. Glazing can be the cause of noisy auto brakes;

Brake fluid and oil leaks from the brake calliper (callipers), wheel cylinders or oil seals;

Damage and/or wear to disc rotors and/or brake drums;

Caliper (calipers) slides to check the parts are moving freely;

If required to determine a fault, Geddes may road test your vehicle.

GEDDES will show you, then advise if a brake repair is required and provide estimates or quotes.

If a part is difficult to source we may need to call you at a later time with the full estimate or quoted price.

TRUCKS: Because of the size of trucks and their wheels studs and nuts, we will not remove parts free. Geddes will provide a free inspection for obvious oil leaks, then provide an estimate of possible brake failure problem causes. If you would like us to check your auto brakes and provide a firm price for the repairs, there will be a charge for this if you decide not to continue with the repair.

BRAKE DRUM (S) & BRAKE DISC(S)(AUTO BRAKE ROTORS)
BRAKE MACHINING SERVICE:

$19.95

If your vehicle has failed it's WOF check, or your autos brakes are noisy, scraping, grinding, squeaking, brake squeal, squealing, rattles or making a grinding noise, the drums or discs may be part of your braking problem.

The braking contact surface of the brake discs or drums may have been damaged by stones, rocks or worn brake (shoes) pads or linings. The discs or drums need only be slightly out of truth (true) and you may feel pulsing or a vibration in the brakes pedal, steering or the vehicle has a shudder or vibrate s when braking, then it is likely that the rotors or drums are warped.

The auto brakes may have been overheated causing the rotors to warp slightly. The brakes may have been overheated causing glazing this causes squeals.

Changing brake pads or brake shoes / linings may not overcome this damage. So long as the brake discs or drums are not below the minimum thickness, Geddes have the tools and machinery at their Onehunga premises to machine brake discs (brake rotor) and brake drums for you as well brake pad.

Geddes can supply and fit new or second hand discs (rotors) & drums. Secondhand parts have a shorter warranty period.

BRAKE VIBRATION

Brake vibration (your wheel shake when braking) can have a number of causes. One cause can be that the brakes have been used heavily causing the brake drums or discs ( rotors) to heat to very high temperatures. If the auto brakes are not cooled down evenly and there is a concentration of heat, this can warp the rotor. If there is sufficient thickness left on the disc we can machine the warp out of the rotor.

Overheating can also create hard spots on the disc.

2 TYPES OF BRAKE LATHES

GEDDES have 2 types of Brake Disc Facing Machines, we are a brake repairs specialist shop @ Onehunga Auckland.

1. On Board Brake Disc Lathe machine.

2. Bench Mounted Brake Lathe Disc Machine.

If you bring your discs or drums to us at Onehunga we can usually machine them on the bench mounted lathe for
$19.95 each or $35.00 a pair.

We have been told that our lathe is similar to an Ammco brake lathe. If you would like us to machine the rotors using our onboard Brake Lathe you will need to bring your vehicle to us at Onehunga.

If we are replacing your pads then this service is an extra $25.00 per disc or drum. Geddes Onehunga have a brake tool for most discs and drums 09 636 7064 Onehunga.

Geddes' brake machines machine discs and drums up to an outside diameter of 500 millimetres. This allows Geddes to repair and service truck brakes and van brake repair @ at our workshop in Onehunga Auckland.

This disc (rotor) is only partly machined, note the different colours of the machined surface. This disc had bad run out and deep rust damage.

BRAKE FLUID REPLACEMENT:

$65.50

Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the atmosphere and should be replaced every 3 years before a problem develops. Heating of the auto brakes can cause heating of the brake fluid. Moisture in the fluid can turn to a gas - this creates air in the brake lines. This can cause a spongy pedal and require a brake service. The moisture in the brake fluid may also cause corrosion of the brake system parts: ABS units, master cylinder and brake cylinders. This small cost is very cheap compared to replacing any parts or an ABS brake repair.

This brake bleeding service includes:

Sucking the remaining brake fluid from the brake master cylinder reservoir; Fill reservoir with good quality brake fluid; Use a suction / vacuum / pressure brake bleeder on each wheel.

The new fluid is drawn through the brake system until the old fluid has been replaced

Brake fluid should be replaced at approximately 3 year intervals. Rubbish and moisture may build up in the braking system. This will eventually cause a problem and the brake system to fail. Truck Brakes

A truck brake repair usually costs more than a car brake repair, the parts are more expensive and a lot more brake fluid is required.

NOTE:

Most vehicles have an automatic adjuster brake unit.

If this adjuster brake unit is damaged there may be a further charge for this brake repair. We will advise you of the brake problem prior to commencing this part of the repair.

Removal of a brake calliper; Clean out and replacement brake kit, seals and brake dust cover boot; Replacement of a brake calliper.

The price does not include flushing or bleeding of the brake system; Some brake calliper service s are more complicated and the parts and repair more expensive.

Simple cleaning and adjusting may not fully cure unbalanced auto brakes. The brakes may require bedding in time or parts replacement.

ANTI LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS BRAKE REPAIR ONEHUNGA)

There are many reasons why an auto anti lock brake system ( ABS brake system) can fail. Give us a call and discuss the ABS brake fault problem you are experiencing.

BRAKE LINE REPAIR or BRAKE LINE REPLACEMENT FROM:

This brake repair service includes:

Making a new flared end on an existing brake line; Replacing the brake line nut; or making a new replacement brake line including bending the brake pipe.

This price is for short pipes. Prices will be estimated or quoted prior to starting to make or repair the pipe.

TRUCK BRAKES & EXHAUST BRAKE REPAIR ONEHUNGA

The exhaust brake system on trucks usually works on vacuum.

The exhaust brake gets the vacuum from the engine or vacuum pump.

Exhaust pipe failure can also cause the exhaust brake to not work, the exhaust pressure is able to leak out. Geddes Onehunga will need to have a thorough inspection of the system in order to determine the cause of the fault.

GEDDES can then discuss the type and cost of the brake repair required.

A simple weld may cure the fault, this could be as little as:
