MECHANIC S FOR ALL AUTOMOTIVE MECHANICAL BRAKE SQUEAL REPAIRS.

GEDDES HAVE THEIR OWN BRAKE LATHES TO MACHINE ROTORS & DRUMS TO REPAIR DISCS TO CURE VIBRATION PROBLEMS.

We provide FREE non intrusive inspections of your vehicles brakes, mechanical & auto electrical problems! We will then give you a free estimate of costs to provide a brake repair, mechanical repair and auto electrical repair.

Auto brake repairs for most of the noise problems with auto brakes include machining of the disc rotors. We machine brake rotors (Discs) & drum brakes at our workshop, this reduces the time you need to wait for brake repairs!

Has your vehicle failed it's WOF because your auto brakes are making a scrapping sound this is most likely because your brake pads or linings have worn down to steel. If you continue to drive your vehicle you will likely be doing more damage to your brake discs. If the squealing scrapping noise is being caused by brake pad or lining metal on the disc or drum metal you could damage your brake disc or brake drum beyond repair and we may need to replace the brake disc causing you extra expense that you could have avoided.

This photo shows a badly warped brake disc rotor partly machined. The area below the "B" that is a darker grey has not yet been machined indicating the disc has warped & or run out. Run out can cause brake shudder.

This photo shows a car brake rotor (brake disc) being machined on Geddes Automotive's brake lathe. This machines out the imperfections caused by brake use. It machines out lips caused by wear of the brake pads against the rotor and also gouges from stones getting jammed between the brake pad and rotor. If brake pads or brake linings are replaced we recommend that the discs or rotors are machined otherwise the brakes may be uneven and fail a WOF.

FAQ: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT NOISY BRAKE FAULTS:

PULSING AUTO BRAKES REPAIR AND SERVICE ONEHUNGA AUCKLAND:

WHY AUTO BRAKES MAKE A NOISE LIKE SCRAPPING AND SQUEAL:

Q. I have a vibration in my brake pedal, what causes this?

A. The most common causes we find are the brake disc rotor or brake drum is out of round. This can either be caused by incorrect machining or the brakes have been hot and unevenly cooled.

Q. My auto brakes are making a scrapping sound, can I keep driving it?

A. You can but you probably should not. If the noise you can hear is the warning devices on the pads touching the brake disc rotor then that will not do much damage. If the noise is the steel backing to the brake pads then they have worn down to steel and this will be damaging your disc rotors. A Geddes mechanic 636 7064 can replace these for you in Onehunga Auckland.

Q. My auto brakes are making a squeal noise what can cause this?

A. There are a number of reasons your auto brakes can squeal: Your brakes have been overheated creating a glazing on your brake pads or linings; you may have lips on the brake disc rotors, the lips rub on the pads causing a high vibration this gives off a high pitched squeal or squeaking noise. A Geddes mechanic technician can machine 636 7064 your discs and replace your brake pads for you in Onehunga Auckland.

Q. My brakes are very noisy there is a really loud screaming sound and the noise changes as I depress my brake pedal what can I do?

A. If you have driven over a newly tar sealed road chances are that a stone has been flicked up by your tyre and has got down behind the caliper and gone between the brake pad and the brake disc. This can cause scoring or gauges in the brake disc rotor so it is best to get it out before you do too much damage. A Geddes mechanic technician can remove this for you 636 7064 before it causes un& or repairable damage. Call us 6367064 Onehunga Auckland.

Q. If my vehicle has a glazed brake pad, will this cause my car brakes to make a noise like squeaking?

A. Yes it can, Geddes Brake and Repair Service can fix this for you at their work shop in Onehunga Auckland, your car may need the brake discs or drums machined.

Q. If my brake calipers are bent or damaged will this cause a squeaking when am braking?

A. Bent, damaged or seized calipers can cause uneven braking and can also cause overheating which can cause your car or van brakes to make squeaking or squealing noises. Have a technician or mechanic check these out for you at our repair and service workshop in Onehunga.

Q. I rely on my vehicle during the day, do you have a courtesy car or courtesy van while my vehicle has a brake pad and brake rotors machined service?

A. Yes Geddes Auto Brake Repairs and Service have both courtesy cars and a courtesy van that you can use while we have a technician replace brake pads and machine brake rotors.

Q. When I touch the brake pedal I hear this terrible screeching squealing sound. Can I get finance on any repairs?

A. It is most likely that your brake pads or linings have worn out. We will likely need to remove your wheels to confirm what is causing the squealing and what what damage has occurred. Give us a call and book your car in for a brake service. If you do not want to drive your vehicle we have a tow truck and can pick your car up from where ever it has broken down.

Q. When my vehicle is stationary and I press the brake pedal I can here some squeaking and squealing coming from behind the wheel what do I need to do?

A. Some of the causes of these types of noises are: There are some squeaking dry suspension joints, some dry caliper slides and even loose bolts can make a squeal when under strain. If something is loose you could loose braking. If the squeaking or squealing is of concern give us a call 6367064 and we can pick it up on our tow truck.

BRAKE PEDAL PULSATES & or VIBRATES:

Q. When I am braking the front of the car vibrates, and I can feel a vibration in the steering wheel, is this vibration dangerous?

A. It usually means the brakes are less effective but not always dangerous. There can be a number of causes of vibration but the usual problem is the brake disc rotors have warped. Warping of your brake discs can occur if the brake rotors get hot then cool unevenly. Our advice is that if you get your brakes and discs very hot then do not stop and park your vehicle, keep your vehicle moving as long as you can to allow even cooling of the brake rotors.

To cure vibration if the disc rotors are warped we can machine your rotors 6367064 here at our workshop 38 Selwyn Street Onehunga Auckland. So long as the rotors have enough thickness so that after machining the discs are still thicker than the minimum allowed thickness, then we can reuse them on your vehicle.

Q. When I am braking I can feel a vibration or pulsing in the brake pedal, the car brakes vibrate, can it be the ABS?

A. Yes ABS brake systems when working (1 or more wheels loosing road traction) will shut off the valve preventing hydraulic fluid pressure going to the skidding wheel and allows the wheel to turn and is designed to help that wheel to not loose traction.

If you are traveling very slowly and none of the wheels are loosing traction but you feel the pedal pulsing then in this instance your ABS brake system may need a brake service or repair. A Geddes mechanic can check this for you.

Q. When my vehicle is moving and I pull the hand brake on gently braking I can feel a pulse in the hand brake lever what causes this?

A. This usually means there is something out of true in the rear brakes. If your hand brake operates a pad against a brake disc rotor then it probably is the rotor has warped, if your system has brake shoes & or linings then the drum could be out of round. If this is the problem with your brakes then machining the disc rotor or drum is the brake service and repair you require. Geddes can do this for you at 38 Selwyn Street Onehunga Auckland New Zealand.

GRINDING BRAKES:

Q. I've just arrived in Auckland and I need a brake automotive repair, I need a mechanic to check out my grinding brakes. What should I do? Can I keep driving the car?

A. Geddes automotive repairs & auto brake repairs have technicians and mechanics who can repair your vehicle. There are a number of reasons why your brakes grinding. Some causes are very dangerous, at best your car wont stop as quickly as it should, at worst your wheel could fall off. The more you use your brakes the more damage you will do to the drums or rotors. So long as your disc rotors have not worn too thin we may be able to machine them on our brake lathe, but continued use could wear them below the minimum allowable thickness.

Geddes Automotive Repairs Onehunga has a vehicle recovery licence and a tow truck. Give us a call 096367064. Sometimes a car tow is free and yes you can apply for finance.

Q. Why is my car / vehicle making the grinding noise and making my car shudder?

A. These are some of the reasons: the wheel bearing is collapsing and the brake rotor is grinding on the brake caliper, brake lining or linings or brake pads have worn out and are steel to steel on the discs or drum, your vehicles brake rotors have lips which are now grinding on the brake pads baking plate, some car & van brakes have tell tales to warn you when the pads are low these could be touching the rotor, the auto brakes may have been overheated and the rotors have warped.

One of the worst possibilities is the brake pad and brake disc rotor have worn so much that the brake pad has fallen out and the caliper piston is grinding on the brake disc rotor. This can cause a great deal of damage; both the rotor and the caliper may need replacing or at least machining. We have an auto email system to locate new and second hand parts.

Q. When I am braking I can hear a grinding noise from the rear of my car; if any parts are required can I get secondhand parts?

A. If the noise either increases or decreases when you press the brake pedal then it is most likely you have noisy brakes. Geddes Brakes have 2 types of brake lathes, an onboard brake lathe and a bench mounted lathe. The bench brake lathe is usually more accurate than the onboard brake lathe.

Our brake repair and service shop is located in Onehunga Auckland, call 6367064 for an appointment. We have the tools to machine warped, scored disc rotors and brake drums and replace brake pads and brake shoes on cars vans and trucks.

Q. If you use used parts can I get a Brake repair on finance?

A. Yes we can, call in or phone 096367064

Q. I live in Ellerslie, Mangere, Otahuhu, Hillsborough, how do I get the car to you? Can a mechanic come to me?

A. We tow cars from all over Auckland, Ellerslie, Hillsborough, Mangere, Otahuhu, We are members of MTA Auckland which is your guarantee that we are a fully equipped workshop with all the right tools to give you quality automotive repairs.

RATTLING BRAKES:

Q. I can hear a rattling sound coming from one of my car & or van & or wheels when braking; is this noise dangerous? Do you have a loan auto car?

A. It could be depending on what is causing the rattling or scraping. Call us 09& or 636& or 7064 Onehunga Auckland, we can collect your car & or van with our tow truck. The rattles noise could be any of the following: a loose hand brake adjuster, loose caliper, broken return spring, broken retaining pin allowing the brakes linings & or shoes to chatter and vibrate, a noisy lining down to steel.

We need to check your brakes and calipers for scraping, may need to slightly adjust your brakes to stop the vibration, your auto brakes may need more major repairs, if you wish we can source second hand brake parts.

Geddes is a MTA approved automotive repair and service workshop and been in business for more than 40 years.

WHY STEERING WHEEL VIBRATE / SHAKES WHEN I BRAKE:

Q. My steering wheel shakes all the time the vehicle is moving, and not just under braking, and I can feel the vehicle going up and down is it my brakes?

A. You probably have a tyre that is out of round but it could also be your brakes. This could be dangerous; you could have a blow out. If you can see a bulge in the tyre then don't drive it and call us, we can pick up your car / van / vehicle on our automotive sliding deck tow truck. We are based in Onehunga Auckland. We tow from Ellerslie, Greenlane, Hillsborough, Mangere, Mt Eden, Mt Roskill Otahuhu, Penrose, for $50.00 + GST and we will quote you a price if you are further away.

Q. I can feel my steering wheel shake when I apply the brakes.

A. It is more likely that at least one your brake rotors or brake drum is warped causing it to vibrate or shake. We will need to inspect that brake disc rotor on our brake lathe. If warped or damaged it will need to be machined (if there is sufficient thickness left on the brake disc). You could need more than one of your discs machined. If your auto has brake drums on the front then it could be the drum or drums that are out of round and need machining.

The vibration could also be the result of a bad or loose wheel bearing, it could also be a loose wheel. Check this by grabbing the wheel with both hands and give it a good shake. If it is loose the either tighten it or call us for advise or for us to pick up your car / van / vehicle on our sliding deck automotive tow truck and return it to our workshop so our mechanic can examine it and quote to repair. We are based in Onehunga Auckland. We tow from Ellerslie, Greenlane, Hillsborough, Mangere, Mt Eden, Mt Roskill Otahuhu, Penrose, for $50.00 + GST and we will give you a quote if you are further away.

CAN ANTI LOCK BRAKING SYSTEMS ABS CAUSE VIBRATING SHUDDERING BRAKES:

Q. Can ABS Anti lock Braking Systems cause pulsing brakes or vibrating or shuddering brakes in my car?

A. Yes. The pulsing feel you get in the brake pedal is often different compared to a braking system that does not have anti lock brake system & or ABS brakes.

The ABS braking system (anti lock braking system) has an abs computer controlling a valve which controls the brake fluid supply to each wheels brake cylinder or caliper, if the wheel speed sensor senses that a wheel is turning slower than the others the ABS computer controls / switches the valve to that wheel limiting the brake fluid oil pressure to that wheels caliper which clamps the brake pad to the rotor or cylinder which forces the brake linings out to the drum and prevents the wheel from locking, hence the name anti locking brake system. The ABS computer and valve pulsing action allows the wheel to turn and keep better traction preventing the vehicle from sliding.

You can often feel this ABS computerise valve action interfering with the brake fluid up to the brake master cylinder and brake pedal as a pulse (the ABS brake valve opening and closing & or anti lock) depending on how slippery the ground surface under each wheel is. Each wheels ABS valve pulses so fast it can feel like its vibrating or shuddering, that is the ABS brake fluid pump and valves opening and closing and pulsing.

Q. I have failed my WOF. The ABS light on my dash stays on and I no longer feel the brake pedal pulsing. Where in Auckland can I get an automotive mechanic to check my ABS Anti lock Braking System and get them repaired?

A. Geddes Automotive have brake MTA approved technician s & mechanic s who can check and advise you of the best repair and service. The can source the parts required, new parts and second hand
